Redwood Family Dermatology

In July 2002, Jeffrey Sugarman MD started his practice as a solo physician. He was later joined by Albert Peng MD, Judith Hong, MD, Ligaya Park, DO, Angela Wyble PA-C and Heather Lowe PA-C. The practice also offers the services of an esthetician, Dionne Ferronato. In August 2006 we opened a satellite office in Ukiah which allows us to help the patients from northern and coastal areas without such a long drive.

Together we strive to be leaders in management of skin health and skin disease by providing the highest level of care, and offering outstanding service. Our providers are committed to clinical, professional, ethical, and academic excellence through active engagement in ongoing medical education, sensitivity to our patients’ needs, and community service.

Mohs Surgery

Developed by Frederic E. Mohs, M.D. in the 1930s, Mohs Micrographic Surgery for the removal of skin cancer is a highly precise, highly effective method that excises not only the visible tumor but also any ?roots? that may have extended beneath the skin surface. Five-year cure rates have been demonstrated up to 99 percent for first-treatment cancers and 95 percent for recurring cancers.

Mohs surgery involves the systematic removal and microscopic analysis of thin layers of tissue at the tumor site until the last traces of the cancer have been eliminated. The immediate and complete microscopic examination and evaluation of excised tissue is what differentiates Mohs surgery from other cancer removal procedures. Only cancerous tissue is removed, minimizing both post-operative wound size scar and the chance of recurrence.

Mohs surgery is most commonly used for basal and squamous cell carcinomas. Cancers that are likely to recur or have already recurred are often treated using this technique because it is so thorough. High precision makes Mohs surgery ideal for the elimination of cancers in cosmetically and functionally critical areas such as the face.

Mohs physicians are highly trained to function as surgeon, pathologist and reconstructive surgeon during the cancer removal process. They work in offices equipped with appropriate surgical and laboratory facilities, and are supported by Mohs-trained nursing and technical staff.

As with any surgery, there is a risk of scarring. There may be temporary or permanent numbness or muscle weakness in the area. Other possible complications include tenderness, itching and pains. Dr. Parks works with and refers to plastic surgeons when large wound size requires.

Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser – an intense, pulsating beam of light – to remove unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.

Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair. Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes several laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period. Periodic maintenance treatments may be needed as well.

IPL Treatment

Both the pleasures and stresses of life, along with the simple passage of time, tend to cause our skin to appear older. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), is a non-ablative mixture of many wavelengths of light which work beneath the skin’s surface to greatly reduce brown spots, discolorations, redness, and broken capillaries. IPL also improves skin tone and texture, and minimizes fine lines by inducing significant structural change in the epidermis and dermis. Generally, a series of three to six IPL treatments is needed to gradually give your skin a more homogeneous appearance.

Vbeam®

The Vbeam® pulsed dye laser is the gold standard for the treatment of vascular lesions and age spots, but it has a wide variety of applications. The following are some of the lesions and conditions for which the Vbeam maybe used.

  • Vascular lesions: port wine stains, facial and leg spider veins,
    rosacea, hemangiomas and venous lakes.
  • Brown age and sun damage spots
  • Warts
  • Scars and stretch marks
  • Acne: attacks the bacteria that causes acne and diminishes characteristic red,
swollen lesions. The result is often clear, blemish-free skin

BLU-U Light Photodynamic Therapy

Levulan Photodynamic Therapy is for the treatment of moderate Actinic Keratoses. This treatment consists of Levulan Kerastick topical solution applied to the affected area along with BLU-U photodynamic light. Levulan makes the lesions sensitive to light; therefore when exposed to the BLU-U, this light causes reactions which destroy the pre cancerous cells. This treatment is particularly desirable on the face, where other methods of treatment may leave white spots. Patients have often reported a positive cosmetic response after receiving the treatment.
