Position Title: Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
Clinic: Petaluma Family Medicine
Location: Petaluma, CA
Summary: Provides primary care to patients acting as an assistant to physicians in the clinic following established standards and practices.
Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but is not limited to the following):
• Obtains complete medical history and physical data on patients.
• Interprets and integrates data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as needed.
• Performs a complete physical exam and records findings. Collaborates with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
• Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
• Synthesizes data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan utilizing principles of prevention.
• Administers medications and injections according to physician direction. Sutures minor lacerations.
• Interviews and advises patients regarding health and illness prevention. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
• Instructs patient and family regarding medication and treatment instructions. Provides patient education.
• Maintains and reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results.
• Triages patient telephone calls and provides consultation.
• Manages medical and surgical emergencies.
• Provides monitoring and continuity of care between visits.
• Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
• Regular and reliable attendance is required to perform the functions of this position.
• This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Education, Licensure and/or Certifications
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
• Possession of a State Nurse Practitioner License.
• Nurse Practitioners must be certified by one of the following organizations that are recognized as national certifying bodies:
o American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
o American Nurses Credentialing Center
o National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties
o Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (previously named the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses)
o Oncology Nurses Certification Corporation
o AACN Certification Corporation
o National Board on Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current state of California Physician Assistant license; certified by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
• Medicare Number
• Controlled Substance Course must be completed within first 6 months of employment.
• Current CPR certification.
• Two years’ experience practicing in medical office environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of professional nursing theory and ability to practice medical care and evaluate patient care.
• Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
• Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of a physician assistant to provide ongoing patient care.
• Skill in taking medical history to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
• Skill preparing and maintaining records, writing reports and responding to correspondence.
• Skill in develop in and maintaining department quality assurance.
• Ability to maintain quality control standards.
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
